His Excellency, Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State on Wednesday 28th January, 2021 at the conference centre of the Petroleum Training Institute PTI Effurun, charged one hundred and sixty pioneers set of matriculating students of DESOPADEC Skill Academy DSA to brace up by finishing the programme successfully in order not o truncate the objective of founding the institution.
The Governor who was ably represented by his Deputy Governor Dcn. Barr. Kingsley Burutu Otuaro in his address as the visitor asserted that, the governor Okowa’s administration is committed to the reduction of unemployment rate to the barest minimum, so they resolved through a concerted effort to birth a Job and Wealth Creation Initiative to put Delta State on the pedestral of prosperity for all as encapsulated in the SMART Agenda.
Deacon Burutu Otuaro, the Delta State Deputy Governor explained that the State Government is happy with what DESOPADEC is doing now in trying to build capacity in Human Capital in terms of training because the State Government is interested in Technical education.
He disclosed that, the State Government due to the priority placed on skill acquisition, early their first tenure, sponsored an Executive bill on Vocational Education, an effort which yielded so much result, today the state have six technical colleges with a target to have one in each of the 25 LGA of the state.
The deputy governor remarked in his speech that, the mindset of the Okowa administration towards productivity and creative economic ventures led to the formation of the office of the chief Job creation officer ably maned by Prof. Eric Eboh to take the youths out of the streets to check criminality and youth unrest and to direct their energies to become entrepreneurs who create wealth and even employ Labour.
Speaking further he said, “we are happy with DESOPADEC, management that today the skill reading is born. we actually mandated NDA”s to key into these kind if ventures, DESOPADEC have done what is expected of it as a commission, we appreciate the chairman Dr Michael Diden and the MD, Bashorun, Askia Ogieh and others.
The Deputy governor while addressing the matriculatants specifically urged them to take the program very dear to their heat because DESOPADEC have given them a life time opportunity.
Earlier in his welcome address, Bashorun Askia Ogieh, the MD /CEO of DESOPADEC thanked the Deputy governor for coming as the visitor to grace the occasion.
He also thanked the royal fathers present in the persons of his HRM Pere Kalanama vill Jp, the pere of Akugbene Mein kingdom 2nd vice Chairman, Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Dr. Johnson Duku JP, King Duku II, the Orovworere of Effurun – Otor Kiingdom and HRM Udogie (JP),. the Ovie of Uzere kingdom who graced the occasion.
The MD expressed delight for the successful flag off of the DESOPADEC Skill Academy adding that it was one of his most memorable time in the Commission because the event marks an upper benchmark in the drive for Human Capital development.
He observed that the successful take off of the Skill Academy underscore one fact that the commission is complimenting the tangibles with the intangibles to conquer our state of helplessness in the area of youth unemploymnent.
Bashorun Askia Ogieh posited that the Skill Academy will continue to be a major pillar to be used by Commission to help our youths to conquer the plague of unemployment.
The DESOPADEC boss stressed in his speech that even though our youths are educated, often time they largely lack skills to acclimatize hence this bold step to bridge the gap to make them wealth creators in line with the state government prosperity agenda.
Baghorum Askia Ogieh maintained that the DESOPPADEC Skill Academy is a platform made available by the Commission through a transparent process which selected 160 successful trainees that will pass through 6 months of intensive training at desigited and approved training points in their various chosen vocation or trade after which they will be equipped to carry on as full fledged entrepreneurs who in no distant time will become proud employers of labour as they contribute their quota towards the building of a stronger Delta vision with unquantifiable multiplier effect on the state economy in particular and Nigeria in general
The MD hinted that the major courses covered by the academy for now include Catering, Fashion Design, Tilling, interlocking; Information technology, information communication technology (ICT) , Health safety and environment etc.
He noted that if the relocation of the operational headquarters of international oil companies demanded by the South South is implemented, the matriculants will not be enough to service the Jobs that we created in the process hence the need to be serious with the program.
The DESOPADEC boss seized the opportunity to clear the erroneous impression by stating categorically that the governor has been very supportive in ensuring that DESOPADEC gets the requisite funding which made it possible for the commission to float the Skill Academy even as they continue in the development of their core minded areas because of the maximum support of governor Okowa .
HRM Pere Kalanma VIIL(JP) the Pere of Akugbene – Mein Kingdom, the 2nd Vice Chairman, Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers in his goodwill message thanked God for giving DESOPADEC management the initiative to come up with the idea of a Skilled Academy which is the best approach to tackle unemployment in our modern day reality.
He advised all stake holders particularly the matriculants to take the program very important because it has a critical role to play in the molding of their destinies.
The royal father who acknowledged that DESOPADEC through the
Skill Academy has blazed the train in the drive for human capital development also thanked the governor for given DESOPADEC the necessary support without which the project will b a pipe dream.
Evangelist Dr Michael diden The chairman of the commission of the DESOPADEC board chairman in his closing remark advised the trainees to ensure that this empowerment should not go the convectional way, other empowerments have gone because the commission is committed to the successful execution of this Skill Academy.
He emphasized that the Commission is ready to do every thing possible to make a paradigm shift from the kind of empowerment which does not translate to tangible and positive results due to nonchalant attitude of recipients or benefitaries.
