Gov Oborevwori poised to eradicate flooding in Delta - Bureau Chief ...Says sensitization campaign to commence as rainy season approaches
The Delta State Bureau for Communications and Orientation has assured that governor Sheriff Oborevwori is poised to eradicate flooding through the construction of additional underground rainwater tunnels and expansive drainages across the three senatorial districts.
The Bureau in a statement by the Director General, Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe on Friday, said the unexpected torrential rain which lasted for several hours on Wednesday, wrecked havoc in some parts of the state, and left a devastating destruction of valuable properties, including vehicles.
Dr Oghenesivbe sympathizes with victims of flooding in Ika South, especially those affected in Agbor axis and some other communities in the state.
He advised road users and motorists against wading through floodwaters with vehicles, emphasizing the danger posed by navigating through moving water which, according to him, can easily sweep away vehicles regardless of their size or the number of occupants.
The Bureau Chief assured that the state governor, Dr (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori, will continue to do whatever it takes within available financial resources to drastically minimize flooding in the state through the construction of additional drainage systems, especially underground rainwater tunnels across the three senatorial districts.
He noted that the devastating effects of the recent flooding in Agbor and other places in the state would have been more damaging, but for the underground rainwater tunnels already in place at strategic locations in Ika South and Ika North East Local Government Area, as well as in other parts of the state.
Dr Oghenesivbe disclosed that as the rainy season approaches, the State Communications and Orientation Bureau, shall embark on sensitization campaign to caution residents on vital precautionary measures that would help them to either over come the devastating effects of flooding or on strategies to reduce its negative effects.
"The State Bureau for Communications and Orientation sympathizes with victims of recent flooding in Agbor and other parts of the state.
"As a Bureau, it's our assigned responsibility to sensitive our people on precautionary measures against the negative effects of flooding. We are already working and shall commence state wide campaign as soon as practicable.
"In the meantime, Residents in the state are strongly advised to avoid dumping refuse on water channels, and other rainwater right of way constructed with taxpayers money by the State government," the statement added.
