From Bias to Breakthroughs: Prof. Arnold Ojugo Reimagines the Role of Intelligent Systems

By WILSON MACAULAY

At the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), the 10th Inaugural Lecture offered more than academic discourse—it offered a vision for the future. On April 11, 2025, Professor Arnold Adimabua Ojugo, Distinguished Computer Scientist and Pioneer Dean of FUPRE’s College of Computing, delivered a compelling lecture titled “Riding the Stormy Dynamics of Biased Data: Knowledge-Driven Opportunities and Implications for Society.”

Drawing from over 16 years of research, Prof. Ojugo painted a vivid picture of how intelligent systems, powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data mining, are not just digital tools but pivotal agents of change in modern society. He argued that in a world awash with chaotic and biased data, intelligent models enable humanity to extract clarity, drive productivity, and uncover truth from the noise.

“Machine learning skillsets empower us to derive intelligent insights from the void of chaos,” he stated, highlighting the centrality of domain expertise and algorithmic precision in transforming raw data into actionable knowledge.

One of the most impactful segments of the lecture was his introduction of the productivity equation, a framework showing how AI tools minimize inefficiencies and boost performance—especially in hybrid and remote work models accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Prof. Ojugo, collaboration driven by intelligent systems reduces rework and helps unearth hidden tasks that affect team dynamics.

In the realm of education, Prof. Ojugo’s learner-centric model showcased how AI can be used to tailor instruction through a mix of visual (40%), kinesthetic (40%), and audio (20%) engagement strategies. This approach, he argued, makes learning more accessible and impactful, fostering deeper comprehension and real-world application.

His message was clear: AI is not magic—it is method. Without high-quality data and contextual understanding, even the most sophisticated algorithms can fail. “We must not worship the tool; we must respect the process,” he cautioned.

FUPRE Vice Chancellor, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, applauded the lecture for its depth, relevance, and scholarly excellence. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Prof. Ojugo was awarded a medal and a commemorative plaque.

The lecture attracted an esteemed audience including Prof. Doris Fovwe Ogeleka (DVC Admin), Prof. Goodswill Oreva Ofualagba (DVC Academics), Dr. Jane Omoyime (Registrar), Mr. Garba Nabayi (Bursar), and Prof. Mercy Anyaegbu (Librarian), as well as distinguished external participants like Dr. Chris 'E Onyemenam, Prof. R.B. Ikomi, Hon. Frank Esenwa, and Ms. Rita Okonjo of the NUC.

PTI Defends Its Reputation Against Misleading Sahara Media Report By Wilson Macaulay Effurun, Delta State July 12 2025 The Management of the prestigious Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, has vehemently refuted a sensational and malicious report published by Sahara Reporters on July 10, 2025, which alleged that students of the foremost oil and gas institution study in “flooded classrooms and snake-infested hostels” despite a ₦39 billion budget. Describing the publication as “baseless, mischievous, and an orchestrated attempt to malign the integrity of the institution,” PTI Management said the report is not only factually inaccurate but also a deliberate attack on the hard-earned reputation and progress of the institution under its current leadership. In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday, the management declared: > “There are absolutely no flooded classrooms or snake-infested hostels within the Institute. These claims are complete fabrications devoid of any evidence or truth.” Management further challenged Sahara Reporters to produce any verifiable photographic or video proof to substantiate its claims. > “If such conditions exist as alleged, Sahara Reporters should have no difficulty presenting concrete evidence. Until then, their report remains a reckless misrepresentation aimed at misleading the public.” PTI clarified that all its lecture halls, laboratories, workshops, and hostels are structurally sound, properly ventilated, electrically powered, and routinely maintained. The Institute prides itself on maintaining a safe and conducive academic environment for learning, innovation, and professional development in the oil and gas sector. The management in clear terms described the publication as the work of “unscrupulous elements seeking to sow discord and cast aspersions on the steady infrastructural development PTI has recorded in recent years.” As a center of excellence in petroleum training and manpower development, PTI has, under its current administration, seen remarkable transformation in terms of physical infrastructure, digital modernization, and student welfare programs. The Institute continues to attract local and international recognition for its cutting-edge research and high-impact training curriculum. While assuring stakeholders, parents, and the general public of its unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of its students, the management reiterated its call for responsible journalism and urged media practitioners to verify facts before rushing to publication. “We remain focused on our mandate and will not be distracted by smear campaigns designed to derail our progress.”
