The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Professor Ezekiel O. Agbalagba, has assured stakeholders of the institution’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, infrastructural advancement, and staff welfare, despite recent misunderstandings involving university unions.
Professor Agbalagba gave the assurance during a media briefing held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Effurun, Delta State, on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
The Vice Chancellor, while addressing a cross-section of journalists, took time to clear the air on issues surrounding an internal conflict involving one of the institution’s staff unions, describing it as a temporary challenge that is already being resolved through constructive dialogue and adherence to due process.
He emphasized that his administration is open to engagement with all stakeholders, including staff unions, in line with democratic principles and the FUPRE Establishment Act of 2017.
“It is important to set the record straight. At no time did the university acted outside the law. Our aim remains to build a peaceful and productive academic environment,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
Speaking further, Professor Agbalagba highlighted the strides his administration has made since he assumed office. These include the inauguration of a Strategic Planning Committee charged with developing a five-year development blueprint that aligns with global energy education standards.
He said FUPRE is steadily moving towards becoming a centre of excellence in petroleum and energy studies, with renewed focus on research, innovation, and infrastructure.
“We are committed to transforming FUPRE into a leading institution, not only in Nigeria but across Africa and beyond, through deliberate investments in teaching, learning, and partnerships,” he said.
Professor Agbalagba also reiterated his pledge to prioritize staff and student welfare, insisting that their interests remain at the heart of his administration’s reforms.
He lauded the press for their role in promoting transparency and building public confidence in the institution, adding that the media remains a critical partner in the journey toward achieving FUPRE’s mandate.
“Your role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm is crucial. We appreciate your efforts and seek your continued support in disseminating accurate information about our institution,” he concluded.
The event was attended by members of the academic community, journalists, and civil society observers, all of whom commended the Vice Chancellor for his transparency and proactive approach to leadership.
