How DESOPADEC Mitigated Flood in Delta State Following The Warning of NIMET

In response to flood threats issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), in collaboration with the Delta State Ministry of Environment, initiated an intensive flood-control campaign across its jurisdiction.

Commencing on Thursday, July 25, the operation entered its second phase in Jesse on Monday, August 4, focusing on comprehensive de-silting of canals and drains. Heavy equipment—pay loaders and trucks—were deployed along the Ukuedejor/Police Station Road, where waste removal and drain clearance were executed with urgency.

Shop owner Mrs. Esther Saturday shared her gratitude:

> “Whenever it rains, water covers everywhere, making it difficult for my customers to patronize me. But now I’m very happy because they can come easily. It’s a great relief.”

Similarly, Mr. Samuel Ajosere, a local vulcanizer, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the initiative, acknowledging that DESOPADEC Chairman Olorogun Bar. John Nani and MD/CEO Chief Festus Ochonogor genuinely care about community welfare.

The timing of the project proved timely: a heavy rainfall during de-silting served as a live testimony to the previous flooding challenges faced by residents of Police Station Road. It underlined DESOPADEC’s intervention’s critical importance in addressing infrastructural shortfalls.

Beyond Police Station Road, de-silting has been successfully carried out in other key locations in Jesse, including Jesse Primary School Road, Akpaka Road, Olympia Road, Oyibo Dedegbo Road, and Uyo Road.

Through this robust exercise, DESOPADEC has demonstrated its commitment to infrastructure development and public safety—delivering tangible improvements that alleviate flooding and improve quality of life in its operational areas.
